What to Expect During Sedation Dentistry

Knowing what happens ahead of time takes away most of the worry. Here is how a sedation visit usually goes at our clinic, step by step.

Consultation

We start by talking. We review your health history and medications, listen to what makes you nervous, and choose the sedation option that fits you and your treatment. Nothing is rushed, and you can ask us anything.

Before Your Visit

We will tell you what to do before your visit. If a ride home is a good idea for your appointment, we will let you know in advance.

During Treatment and Finishing

The sedation is given. For laughing gas, a small nosepiece rests over your nose while you breathe normally. We adjust your comfort as we go and add numbing where needed. When treatment is done, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes, and the relaxed feeling fades.

Oral sedation: This is a pill taken before your appointment. You feel drowsy and deeply relaxed, though still awake. Recovery takes longer, and you will need someone to drive you home. We do not offer this in-house, but we can refer you.

IV sedation: Medication is given through a vein. You become deeply relaxed and may remember little of the procedure, but you are not fully asleep. You will need a ride home and rest afterward. We do not offer this in-house, but we can refer you.

After Sedation: Recovery and Getting Home

Recovery depends on the type of sedation. After laughing gas, the effects clear within a few minutes of breathing pure oxygen, and most people feel fine to drive, which we confirm with you on the day. After oral or IV sedation, recovery takes longer and you will feel drowsy for a while.
